"Something Very Different" Acrylic Canvas 24" x 30"

While organizing some very old art works of mine I came upon this piece.  I almost can't believe I did it.  So very different than what I am doing now!  I couldn't make out the date in the right hand corner?  Maybe thirty plus years ago?
(Working hard on surprise art gifts.  Will post ASAP!  Also getting my MFA portraits organized to post photos soon!  So what is going on in your neck of the woods?)

  1. Bonjour cher ami,
Oui effectivement peut-être différent...mais, j'aime beaucoup. Mon regard s'emporte au loin, par-dessus toutes ces lignes. Une peinture qui excite la rêverie.

    ❁ Gros bisous ❁

  2. It is interesting how much we change as we develop our artistic talents. I love this piece, I would never pin it to you but it is is a beautiful abstraction. I see waves and the colors are well thought out. I look forward to see your surprise art gifts, they never disappoint! You are very generous with your talents Michael!

I am happy you are rooting for Italy and watching the World Cup. There was a lot of excitement over their win on Saturday. It is fun to follow the games here, especially when Italy wins( it was midnight here but we stayed up to watch). Italy and U.S. are my teams and I thought of you when Portugal played. I love the spirit of the games and like you find it hard to pick a team to route for.

    1. Hello My Dear Great Watercolorist Celia! Thank you again for visiting and always making my day with your wonderful and very supportive comments!
I certainly have changed over the years. I am still surprised that this work is mine! I do remember painting it! I think it was one of my first attempts at acrylics after using mostly oils and some watercolors!
Thought of you when Italia lost the other day! My heart goes out to all the Italians routing for the home team! You are so right about the spirit of the World Cup Games! We are watching as many games as we can! All the teams play with such enthusiasm! I also love the different styles of team uniforms! Cameron, Croatia, Angola are some of my favorites. As an artist I so love the off the chart bright colors! The shoes also rock the art world!
Sunday USA plays Portugal! As much as I love Portugal I so want my home USA to win and advance. I am hoping for an exciting match, many goals, very close, but at the end.....USA wins!
      Take care Celeste!
Go Italia! (And Everyone Else too!)

  3. It is surprising when digging through older works what one comes across...this one is quite zen...I like it! I agree that I never would have thought it was your work except maybe the colour palette. As painters we need to respect our older works.
Recently I did a 'talk' at a community centre, showing a retrospective of my works. Invariably older works spark a memory of an art process we were learning at the time.

    1. Hello Sally! You are certainly right about being surprised! I love the zen comment! Yes it is very zen. It is quite relaxing to look at. Odd that most of my work now is so very wild! I like when you say respect our older works. I feel the same way with everything that is old. Funny how many people tend to make fun of the styles and more from the past. I always question how styles come and go and who decides if they are "good" or "bad!"
Thanks for your insights on this one Sally!

  4. I find it so interesting to see our work from the past....and see how much we've changed. I like this painting Michael ...and so different from how you paint today.
I'm looking forward to seeing your portraits...I know you will be wonderful! (I think you should be doing more abstracts as well !)

You are right it is so very interesting to see our work from the past!
I soon will post my portraits from the MFA class. Some aren't finished but I still like them. I need to take photos then post ASAP. You are such a great portrait artist I hope you like them even a little bit!
I do love abstracts Hilda and I will get back soon! Especially ones that have a hint of wild storms and wild oceans!
      Have a great weekend!

  5. Hi, Michael - in this older piece I believe I see the sense of motion and and energy that you have developed over the years - especially in the paintings of the ocean with majestic, crashing waves that you do so wonderfully. The seeds of your future development were already there!

    1. Hello My Dear Art Buddy Susan! Always great to hear from you!
Thank you so much for liking my ocean paintings. I so much appreciate your describing them as majestic! Thanks Susan! Now that you mention it I do see a bit of ocean in this work. Definitely see my love of the color blue! Amazing to go back to the past once in awhile!
I wonder what other seeds are ready to bloom!! Check back again in another thirty years or so?!?!
      Take care Susan!

  7. This one looks much more abstract than your present piece and not as dramatic. It is fun to see how your work has changed.

    1. Hi Joan!
I agree. So very different. Abstract! Well planned out and so much more! Now I let myself go so much more. Now I seldom have a plan or definite idea of the final outcome of my work. I always say that I have an idea but it is always vague. Huge difference!
      Love your watercolors Joan!
      Thanks for dropping by buddy!

  8. Hi Michael, I agree with Sally that it is very Zen! I actually see it as a mountain range. It's so nice to get a peek at some of your older work - the colours are very soothing. I look forward to seeing your portraits!
Are you getting some nice warm weather yet? Soon I will be enjoying a northern hemisphere summer - although I have just checked today's forecast for both London and Perth and they are almost identical - 22 degrees Celsius with rain here and 21Celsius with rain there!
I posted a follow up comment on your last post!
    Happy painting Michael!!

    1. Hey Wendy!
Zen is such a great comment! I love being Zen sometimes!
However, the best part is your reference to mountains. With all the comments and my revisiting this piece I was brought back to my reference for this work. It was a mountain scene! Yes! The USA's Blue Ridge Mountain Range! Specifically a spot called Skyline Drive! Years ago my family visited that area on a road trip from Massachusetts to Florida. I took many photos of the mountain range and later depicted them in this painting! So very happy to remember the events that led up to this work! Amazing buddy that you saw the mountain range in this one! One of my favorite American singers, the late John Denver, had a huge hit about the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. "Take Me Home Country Roads" Part of the song goes like this, "Almost heaven West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains...." I used to play that song on the guitar over and over again.
Imagine England having the same weather as Australia! What's up with that!
I am so eager to see photos from your upcoming trip and written updates.
Happy Painting to you also Wendy!
Thanks for the Mountain Range observation!

  9. "The hills are alive!" Could easily be Vermont.
Yes, it is not a typical Michael Perchard piece but who wants a typical Michael Perchard anyway. We like you the way you are - spontaneous!

    1. Hey Joe! So very good to hear from you! I agree with you buddy! I so much love to be spontaneous and less planned with my work. Who was that Michael Perchard who did this piece! I wonder what the future will bring for my art! Best to the family!

    2. You nailed it Joe! Blue Ridge Mountains! After a trip to Skyline Drive many years ago I was inspired to do this one! Certainly could have been beautiful Vermont!

  10. A study of mass, of shapes, of color values. Nice! Of course it's different, we keep changing everyday. You've become a lot more complex over the years. This pointing helped you get here. Hugs and happy painting Michael.

  11. Hi Linda! That is exactly what it is. I so remember making each and every line and shape make sense. I recall wanting each piece to balance the other and make some sort or "art' sense! So complex is right.. Fun to wonder why! You are so right about the past getting us to the present. I so love your latest "Green" work! Wild and so very exciting!
Hugs and Happy Painting To You Also Linda!
