"MFA, Autumn, Works In Progress"

Hello Art Buddies!
Great to be back at MFA!
Also great to be back posting some of my art!

Pencil Sketch Of East Boston Triple Decker
Pen and Ink East Boston Triple Decker
East Boston Triple Decker
Unfinished
Acrylic Canvas 20" x 30"
This is the beginning of another of my many versions of this East Boston Triple Decker!
I posted a photo of the first of this series some time ago. Titled it "Last One Standing!"
While  at MFA I am painting this scene two ways at the same time.  This first one is going to be more of a wild and spontaneous version.  The photo of the one below may turn out to be a bit more representational and serious?!

Working on this piece with a rough sketch underneath.  I seldom, if ever, do a sketch on the canvas.  Thought I would work a bit differently.
Both paintings are in their very early stages!  Let's see what happens!
Acrylic Canvas 20" x 30"

Also in progress.
"Love That Dirty Water!"
Acrylic Canvas 12" x 14"
When we were younger on hot summer days in East Boston we would swim at the local piers. I am very excited about finishing this piece.  Evokes many great memories growing up in
the city!
Love Autumn!
Foliage is just starting to change.
Field near my home.

Another early Autumn scene from Middleboro ,Massachusetts, USA!
Fall could be my favorite season!
(However I am looking forward to snow this winter!)

  4. While away you did paint! I love the triple decker ink sketch. It has such character, it's no wonder why you are fascinated by it. That bridge photo too is a painting waiting for your hand. The swim painting is also intriguing. Michael, you have really not been away at all. Your energy is contagious!

  7. I've been off traveling for a while, and am finally home and able to post and check blogs again. Glad you are back posting something new and something in the works. I like the idea of doing the same subject different ways at the same time. I just love the kids jumping off the pier...super!!! I am slowly posting my work from my trip and I hope you stop in to see.

Your fantastic sketches always make me happy and allow me to share all your great painting adventures! Thanks buddy! I am glad you like doing the same subject more than once. 9. So nice to visit your blog and see such inspiring work, Michael! So funny that 3 story Boston buildings are called Triple Deckers - I never heard that before! Love your pen and ink sketches - they seem so spontaneous and lively. Can't wait to see how the two different painting approaches to a single subject will turn out! And "Love That Dirty Water" has your signature vitality and electrified energy! How nice that you are back at the MFA - I know how much you love the classes there! Happy Autumn to you - it is also my favorite time of year and I am loving the changing leaves and crisp nights!

    1. So very nice that you did visit my little blog! Thank you so much Susan! Always happy to see your name come up on the comment screen! I am thrilled that you like my work. Means so much to me! I am glad you got a kick out of our "triple deckers" aka "three deckers"! Your comments always make me smile. I so appreciate you taking the time to write. Thanks Susan! Your wonderful comments always make my day! Keeps me going! I am glad you also like the autumn! Just today, on a car ride with a friend, we both were "ooing" and "ahhing" at the so off the chart colorful foliage! I sometimes can't get over how so very, very beautiful the fall season is! Even in the rain! Then next up is beautiful snowy winter! Life can be so good!
Take care Susan! Love your rocking art! So very good!

  10. Michael, I love the drawings, so much character to them and they certainly stand on their own! More of these please!
And great to see you putting them to paint. I am anxious to see the finish.
Your painting in progress "Love That Dirty Water!" brings to mind the George Bellows painting of the same subject, "Forty Two Kids", very cool to have these memories from your childhood!
I know we both share a love for the Ashcan School.
You must bring this one to a finish!
Love the clever title from the song! Ironically, a California rock band singing about Boston water and beloved by you Bostonians!

    Keep painting...

  11. Hey Buddy! Great to hear from you David! I am so happy you like my sketches. I am not one to draw much. Not sure why! These two were so much fun! I am glad you like the "character" in the works. I do so love the Ashcan school of art! Best cityscapes ever!
It is odd that California rock band sang the original version of Dirty Water!!! Now it is a huge anthem in Massachusetts. The "Drop Kick Murphy's" have sort of an "Irish Punk Rock" version that is very cool!!
I so enjoy having you, and so many others, as art buddies! Thanks David!
    Take care!

  12. What a wonderful post Michael, sorry I've taken so long to comment on it! Your pencil and ink sketches are fantastic as are your paintings - be careful though - sketching can become addictive! I love the different versions of your triple decker as well as your WIP. You have really captured the exuberance of youth and I can imagine how much fun you had there as a child. As usual I love seeing my favourite Boston statue - I hope to sketch it in situ one of these years! Your fall photos are stunning! The colours are lovey and the settings so picturesque. Is that bridge near where you live?
Your Understanding Entirely Why You Love Autumn So Much Art Buddy!
