"Michael Van Gogh" Quick Sketch! Graphite Paper 10" x 12"

 "Bandaged Ear"
A very quick graphite sketch for my upcoming self portrait, "Michael Van Gogh" painting!
I am not a big fan of doing the "work" part of art work! However I do know the importance of practicing a bit before I put brush and paint to canvas. This quick sketch is a good exercise for me! Now I know where the future challenges are!
(I never realized how broken my broken nose looks!  Old high school and college football injury!)

To Boston today!  May sneak over to the MFA!  Check out Homer, Hopper, Vincent, El Greco, Monet, Turner, and of course the museum's Samurai Exhibit!

    This get acquainted drawing is fun. The painting will be too. It's amazing what we learn when we do the initial sketch, very valuable--and yet when we put paint to canvas, it becomes a whole new deal. Why is that? I'll never know. It's just interesting. Happy painting. Happy museum trip.

      Thanks for your kind words Linda! It is so very true about the amount learned from drawing first! I should get back to drawing. That is where it all started for me when I was a very young boy! Painting for me is so very different from drawing. I did have a happy museum visit! Thank you Linda!

      After "Vincent" posted his comment I was concerned about offending anyone. I certainly would never ever make fun of anyone. I am glad you got a kick out of "Vincent"s" comment! It seemed so very funny at the time!

      I do hope you get time to check out your state gallery! We are so very fortunate that somebody thought of saving so much great art all over the world.
      I did get to go to the museum while we were in Boston. I loved everything! Especially the current show on "Samurai!"

    I'm looking forward to seeing this painting...! It is a fun sketch. I love sketching things in preparation for a painting. Sometimes I wind up liking the sketch best! (There is something so lovely about a good drawing...like this one)! Have fun at the MFA :)

      I am glad you liked my sketch! That smile looks a bit over the top! But that is how the photo looked. In the painting I may take some license. Nice to look like Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington?
      After reading your comment and Linda's I may get back to drawing for the sake of drawing! I used to love to draw. Time is so very valuable. Must use it wisely!
      At the MFA I was thinking of you Celeste. I spent much tme at the Sargent exhibit. Checked out his portraits and other work. All I could think of is your many posts referencing him!

    This is a wonderful sketch, Michael! I started a sketch yesterday but I'm not too happy with it....so I'll do it in pastels...I can't wait to see the painting, especially since the sketch is so good!!!

      Yes I did see you wave Joan! I knew it had to be you because I saw this fantastic artist sketching from her car! No sketching or texting while driving though!
      How was Maine! I love Maine! I love, love, love the rocky coast! Of all the oceans on the planet I think the New England North Atlantic is at the very top of my list! So many great things about the state of Maine!

    Hello Susan!
    A fun subject is so right! Now that I am painting the actual portrait I am remembering the "work" involved in a "work of art!" It is good for me to be disciplined once in a while! I am working very hard on the portrait. Hoping to be completed soon!
